How to set up a discount offer

Increasing average order value with discount offers


Discount based upsell offers are a powerful way to increase average order value by encouraging customers to add more items to their cart.

Common use cases include:

  • Offering a discount when customers add two or more products
  • Promoting products with high stock levels
  • Moving discontinued or end of line items


Important note about discounts

Discounts can only be applied during offer setup.

Once an offer has been saved, a discount cannot be added or changed. If you need to update the discount, you will need to create a new offer.


How to create a discount offer

Step 1: Create a new offer

  1. Open Upsell Popup from your Shopify admin.
  2. Navigate to Offers in the left hand menu.
  3. Click Create offer.
  4. Enter your offer details.


Step 2: Choose products for the discount

In the Cross sell products section:

  1. Select how products should be offered, for example specific products, a collection, or smart auto-pick.
  2. Choose the products you want to include in the discount.

These are the products that will receive the discount when added via the popup.


Step 3: Apply a discount

  1. Enable Apply discount.
  2. Enter the discount value.
  3. Choose a Discount type:
    • Percentage (%)
    • Fixed amount
  1. Enter a Discount message.

The discount message appears in the cart when the discount is applied.



Example: Buy one get one 50% off

To create a buy one get one style offer:

  • Discount: 50
  • Discount type: %
  • Discount message: Buy 1 get 50% off selected items

This encourages customers to add more items while clearly communicating the benefit.


Step 4: Set popup frequency and actions

Finish setting up your offer by configuring:

  • Popup display frequency to control how often customers see the offer
  • Popup actions to define what happens when:
    • A product is added
    • All offer products are added
    • The popup is closed

These settings help prevent over showing offers and create a smoother customer experience.


Best practice tips

  • Percentage discounts work well for encouraging multiple item purchases.
  • Keep discount messages short and clear.
  • Test different discount values to find the best balance between conversion and margin.
  • Combine discounts with limited product selection for stronger urgency.
